Im Juni 1949 brachte der Dampfer "Esja" rund 200 Frauen aus Deutschland nach Island, wo sie sich als Dienstmädchen auf Bauernhöfen verdingten. Darunter auch Heinrich Liebers Mutter, von der er immer geglaubt hatte, sie sei nach seiner Geburt gestorben. 40 Jahre später ist Heinrich Bauingenieur, verheiratet, doch sein Leben gerät auf einmal ins Wanken. Der sonst so korrekte Mann fasst einen überstürzten Entschluss und reist nach Island, wo er sich auf die Suche nach seiner Herkunft macht.
