Adam Zamoyski's bestselling account of Napoleon's invasion of Russia and his catastrophic retreat from Moscow, events that had a profound effect on European history.

In 1812 the most powerful man in the world assembled the largest army in history and marched on Moscow with the intention of consolidating his dominion. But within months, Napoleon's invasion of Russia—history's first example of total war—had turned into an epic military disaster. Over 400,000 French and Allied troops perished and Napoleon was forced to retreat.

Adam Zamoyski's masterful work draws on the harrowing firsthand accounts of soldiers and civilians on both sides of the conflict. The result takes the listener beyond the invasion of Russia to present both a poignant tale of the individual foot soldier and a sweeping history of a turbulent time.

Very informative and interesting. Keeps the attention easily. I do wish a little more attention was paid to at least the bigger battles. The author (and her dues warn at the outset) gives only very broad over views. I understand not getting into the fine details on every battle, but doing it for the bigger battles would have provided needed context for us to “fill in the gaps” for all the rest. Over all I enjoyed it and would recommend.

Excellent.

This book satiated my hunger for the time period. It gives you an in depth grasp of every part of the campaign, and has some particularly harrowing, disturbing, and tragic first hand accounts. A must read for any enthusiast of the Napoleonic Wars.

Powerful

Outstanding!!!! So good I was hoping it would not end, great mix of the overall campaign and individual soldiers. Can not recommend enough.

Informative, well written, great narrator

This is a good read, well researched. The focus is not so much on geopolitics but on the people who willing or unwilling participated in this campaign. Lots of harrowing stories and some of hope. What is really missing is a PDF with a map of the campaign.

Good read, focus on people. Maps would be nice

Couldn’t stop listening to this. I had to listen to it three times to be sure I had some of the more interesting stuff memorized.

Horrifically detailed. Reminds us why war should be avoided if at all possible
