So often associated with science fiction and stories of the supernatural, H. G. Wells also had a flair for the comedic and the absurd. His short story "Mr. Brisher's Treasure" delights with a title character given to broad, slapstick behavior and mannerisms that could make one nearly drop their book chuckling.

The treasure trove he discovers in the most unlikely of places leads to impromptu plotting to take possession of it right under the noses of others. Complications, blunders, and a violent lightning storm lead to a marvelous, ironic twist.

Editorial reviews

H. G. Welles proves himself not just master of science fiction narrative, but also of the short story with this vaudevillian tale of how buried treasure enabled Mr. Brisher to flee his one engagement and "save" him for lifelong bachelorhood. David Ian Davies brings an entertaining degree of obliviousness to his performance of Mr. Brisher, and of skepticism to the unnamed victim of his storytelling. The tale itself includes an uncollected treasure, a nighttime trip over a pail in the scullery, a jealous fiancée, and her father, a counterfeiter of coins, chasing Brisher with a gun. As Brisher describes his escape, "I was always a bit good at planning, although carrying it out isn’t so much in my line."

In Mr. Brisher’s Treasure, H. G. Wells introduces us to a dubious narrator—a man who, between drinks and sighs, shares a tale of lost love, buried silver, and choices that left him empty-handed. But is the treasure really the point?
