1866. On a dark, brooding summer’s evening, Agnes Lenham seats herself in an empty first-class compartment on the train to Portsmouth. She is joined by a naval officer and a middle-aged man, in high spirits after dining at his club, travelling to his home on the Isle of Wight. His name is Giles Blanchard – and within moments of the train leaving the station, the sailor strangles him . . .

At Scotland Yard, Detective Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming are called to Superintendent Tallis’s office, and given details of the violent murder. Their investigation will take them all the way to Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s favourite country home, to find out exactly what took place on that dreadful, eerie night.

Marston has created an intriguing set of characters situated in a creative and manageable world. But he has gotten a bit lazy in these later offerings and fallen prey to the serial author's method of writing enough words to suit an editor - he has started repeating tropes again and again with very little difference of expression. I like the series so much I will buy the last one with the hope it remains fresh throughout.

Wonderful plot, Solid characters.

Mr. Marston has another winner. It was an excellent mystery for the detectives to solve and the details of each link of the puzzle were handled perfectly. And as usual, the narration was top notch, and quite a few characters to manage. Well done and highly recommend.

I love this series and could not wait until they captured these villains! Secrets abound when a high profile man is murdered and the culprits are in the run!

I have listened to all the Railway Detective stories.
They are set in an interesting time and many storylines add variety.
The language is old fashion which is nice. Some of the things the grandpa says is a bit irritating but that’s real life

Love Railway Detective
