In the ancient city of York, winter brings Christmas markets, cold weather…and murder.

Snow dusts the cobbled streets of York as tourists flock to its famous Christmas markets. But for DCI Oldroyd, what starts as a peaceful evening on a ghost tour quickly turns deadly.

The tour guide’s grim discovery is no theatrical performance—he finds the body of Henry Marlow, a notorious local landlord, in the doorway of a derelict building. Oldroyd soon has no shortage of suspects: a resentful ex-wife, angry tenants, and even the guide who knows every secret passage of the old city.

As festive lights sparkle above the narrow passageways of York, darkness gathers below when a second body is found in the shadow of the ancient cathedral. Can Oldroyd untangle the web of secrets and lies before anyone else dies? As the holiday season approaches, it seems the killer is planning on making this a Christmas to remember—for all the wrong reasons…

I know York well and the author did a decent job of describing locations! This was another story I had to listen straight through, it was so excellent!

Another fascinating tale!

Another great story with great narrations. I have listened to every book in this series and I’m looking forward to the next one.

I have read all of Yorkshire mysteries and have throughly enjoyed the clever mysteries and the historic background. With each book there has been a bit of preaching on a socialist agenda. Some I agree with; some not. But that is not the point. The mystery in this book is as clever as the rest, but the majority of the book is one sermon after another. Preachy. Preachy. Preachy. I haven’t decided whether to continue the series. I will go to church if I want a sermon or a political rally. I hope to return to Yorkshire for another mystery.

An Interesting Anecdote in the middle of a Sermon

This series is one of my favorites, so I was disappointed with Murder in York.. It felt as though J. R. Ellis was up on his soapbox about the homeless problems as though too many of us are heartless, which I do not believe is true. If this was supposed to be a feel good story it fell flat with me. There was one other big problem with the book but it would be a spoiler if I mentioned it.

It's OK

Great plot, excellent sub plots, and I always love the location descriptions and atmosphere JR Ellis' Oldroyd series. This one was different in that it is set in the city, instead of a small town, and just before Christmas, but just as compelling. Makes me want to visit York. ... And wander around Yorkshire too!

Always a fascinating story with DCI Oldroyd. And the superb performances by Michael Page in all the Oldroyd stories bring the rich characters to life.

Great all round as usual with DCI Oldroyd.
