Ten years after the Keymon were driven from Earth, the war against the Insectoid creatures is coming to an end. However, as the tidings of victory arrive, there are increasing signs of strife for the throne still occupied by Ulan Mestray, leader of the Akkato. Suddenly Dominic Porter is confronted with the question of what to do with the millions of people who were useful to the Akkato in the fight against the Keymon, but who now represent a costly ballast. The situation seems hopeless until Serwan Brooks makes a resolution that seems sensible but could end in disaster for Earth and humanity....

This is what humans are called by the many races of the Milky Way. As survivors and refugees, they try to assert themselves among the cultures of the galaxy, which is called ASGAROON by its inhabitants. Some of them have managed to make a name for themselves in the feudal society of ASGAROON. Others eke out an existence as homeless wanderers. But regardless of their status, the new inhabitants of ASGAROON are met with suspicion and contempt...
