Naked is a collection of poems written by Author La’ Kendrick Thompson during what he describes as his personal “Great Depression.” The title exemplifies his life during this time, believing that God stripped him down to the bare minimum, leaving him with nothing but time to reflect.

The poems are broken down into seven sections, all describing the emotions he felt while writing them: Pain, Love, Lust, Awareness, Knowledge, Guilt and Healing. Thompson holds nothing back, showing complete vulnerability. His bravery is shown from beginning to end, sharing his personal struggles with anxiety, depression, suicide, heartbreak, and righteousness. Although his poems have many dark moments, Naked ends on a positive note, as Thompson expresses his desire to grow spiritually, by giving praise and thanks to God. Naked is an amazing collection of poems written therapeutically, in hopes of helping others overcome their battle with mental health.

This book of Poetry is unique yet relatable in a universal way. I have always marveled at the gift of expression and personal transparency of this author. Especially being a black male, which is not something that most men do well. However, I must say that he has mastered it in a way that many men and women will find liberating and thought-provoking. This book may lead to self-examination and an unpacking of emotions, which may lead to personal growth and understanding of ourselves and the root causes of our changing emotions and relationships. Sometimes all we need to know is that our feelings are not isolated. You need this book in your library.

It is truly relatable and Reflective
