Many people compare depression to an abyss - a never-ending downward spiral of hopelessness. In this heavy, but empowering, follow-up to the best-selling Get Out of Your Head: A Toolkit for Living with and Overcoming Anxiety, author Brian Sachetta takes that comparison literally, bringing listeners on an aquatic adventure, through one of life's most difficult challenges.

On that journey, Sachetta explores the biological, psychological, and social forces behind the affliction, to help listeners understand how it often manifests in their lives. And, most importantly, he provides a beacon of hope to those stranded at sea, or caught in the whirlpool of despair.

It's one mental health voyage you won't want to miss.

This is an amazing book that uses skillful analogies and personal experience to tackle a difficult but widespread subject. Despite the fact that I am a doctor who has researched depression extensively, I found useful thoughts and insights on the human condition.

Depression is a complex and multifaceted issue that can have many different causes. This book provides an excellent overview of the topic, from discussing what depression actually means to providing practical tips for dealing with it. I love how this book discusses mental health in such a hopeful way - as something we should learn about and work towards overcoming together rather than be ashamed or scared by. The entire at sea concept was brilliant, because there are so many analogies you could use when talking about depression - which makes it much easier to understand the idea behind the emotion even if you’re not experiencing it yourself. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this heartfelt and informative piece of literary art as a resource to help those who want to overcome the great abyss.

There are many metaphors in this rather well-produced audiobook, and I think it helps in the navigation process as the subject is one dear to my heart. One of my family members suffers from depression and I have seen firsthand how it can affect both her and the family unit. This book is as said, a ship in a storm, this will clarify, soothe and hopefully help to reduce depression, in a word, it is the "pathway" out. Great book.
