From New York Times bestselling author, Jay Kristoff, comes a dangerous new fantasy world and a heroine edged in darkness.

Mia Corvere is only ten years old when she is given her first lesson in death.

Destined to destroy empires, the child raised in shadows made a promise on the day she lost everything: to avenge herself on those that shattered her world.

But the chance to strike against such powerful enemies will be fleeting, and Mia must become a weapon without equal. Before she seeks vengeance, she must seek training among the infamous assassins of the Red Church of Itreya.

Inside the Church's halls, Mia must prove herself against the deadliest of opponents and survive the tutelage of murderers, liars and daemons at the heart of a murder cult.

The Church is no ordinary school. But Mia is no ordinary student.

"A brain-churning, gore-splattered monster of a book." (Daily Mail)

"With a delicate balance of the ancient and the magical, this tense and brutal tale is unflinching, thrilling and satisfying." (Publishers Weekly)

"Joins lyrical high fantasy, Pratchett-like humour and unflinching descriptions of violence.... Something special." (SciFi Now)

Character voice is amazing in this book, and it really is the driving force that makes me recommend it. The narrator, is funny.

People call this book edgy, but I whole heartedly disagree. Maybe it is because the over saturation of the term, but this book isn't edgy by any stretch of imagination if we go by the literal meaning of the word. So, don't be off put by it.

It does feel info dump heavy, however. If you aren't alright with those, you might feel the first few chapters grueling.

The voice of the book is amazing, but male characters voices is where it falls apart; males do sound samey, but it is not a biggy. Female voices shine.

Grim dark with character voice

Utterly delightful trilogy by a master story teller. Someone told me it was Harry Potter with proper LGBT representation but it’s so much more. It’s immersive, enthralling and utterly addictive.

The narrator is ridiculously good. Easily the best narrator I have ever heard and my audible library stands at 450 books.

The best

This is a fun fantasy book. the narrator is visceral and often darkly funny. the characters are very likeable (or hateable when it comes to the villlains) and the world is imaginative and fun. Kristof goes into many gory details and while it could be excessive in another book, it fits perfectly with the story being told. The performance is also great. it's full of energy and definitely captures the tone of the book well.

A bloody, good time.
