In a life-or-death emergency with a mother in labor, she oversteps her boundaries and risks arrest. Determined to practice medicine, she decides to join her mentor on the Neptune, a warship heading for open waters.

Following an accident, she is quickly thrust into the role of ship surgeon, and her skills are put to the test. Hoping to fit in with the all-male crew and make friends, instead, Ella creates chaos and suspicion among the superstitious sailors. Lieutenant Jack Wyse, though charged by the captain with protecting Ella, is keen on making her leave.

After a fierce battle, Ella saves the handsome officer, Robert Weston. Her commitment to her profession is tested, however, when he asks for her hand in marriage. But are Weston's intentions sincere, and would he allow her the freedom to pursue her calling?

Ella must decide where she belongs before her future sails away from her.

Heroic Determined Ella Wins the Heart

Alina Rubin and Ana Clements have done it again. This author/narrator combo is a magical mix sure to delight.

The story is wonderful, wholesome, heartwarming, invigorating, yes...ok...it's all those things. But there are societal injustices and oppression of women to consider. Separation of class. Hard truths that will be faced in every generation til then end of time. But here's the thing with Alina Rubin. She masterfully pricks the mind without beating one over the head. And she does it while writing a really really really really good story.

I'm not sure whether to call the Narrator Ana Clements, Ella, Mr. Black, Weis, Grey...or, good grief, any numer of the other characters in the book. Brilliant perfomance! I can see each character's face and feel the fabric of their clothing. If I ran into one of them in the street; I'd know their name. It's extraordinary what you do to bring a story to life.
