Martinique and her Uncle Rowland both love adventure. Niki - or Nike, as her uncle Rowland calls her after the Greek goddess of victory - loves to sail. Rowland, a retired university professor, is prone to pontification and ad hoc lectures on whatever subject comes to mind.

Niki and Uncle Rowland set out to circumnavigate the world, much to Aunt Louisa's consternation. They have a pleasant trip until something strange happens in the South Pacific, and they find themselves shipwrecked on a desert island. They soon discover that this island has many secrets, and they worry they may never leave.

On top of the usual concerns about if and when they might be rescued are the mysteries surrounding their island, including the phenomenon that left them shipwrecked on a tropical island. Come along with Niki and Uncle Rowland as they face the unknown, uncertainty, and danger in the South Pacific.
