Consciousness survives the death of the body - that much can

form of consciousness - an ego-identity - that could perceive
physical reality in a radically new fashion. Human consciousness would
become the thinking portion of the earth, and could begin to
construct, for itself and the other creatures of the earth, a physical reality of the sort that a sane god would create. If this thesis is
correct, it should be possible to trace the emergence of an ego-
identity down through the millennia, following its historical
development as reflected in our changing mythologies, and in
the societies that created them. This volume sets out on a quest
to follow the developing ego through history’s pages, and ends
with a revolutionary new understanding of our present culture,
and the reasons behind our erroneous belief that consciousness
