It is 1918. Coming out of retirement, an aging Sherlock Holmes travels to Palestine with his 19-year-old partner, Mary Russell. There, disguised as ragged Bedouins, they embark on a dangerous mission. If they fail, the holy city goes up in flames.

With her unerring flair for the dramatic, Laurie R. King packs this novel with bloodcurdling adventure, clever disguises, and layers of intrigue. Jenny Sterlin's superb voicing of the prickly Holmes and the fiercely intelligent Russell captures every nuance of their unconventional relationship.

Wow! What an adventure! The narration was fabulous, as always, the writing was wonderful, and the story and plot gripping. I just can't say enough good things about this story and series!

Best one yet!

Mary Russell is an exciting young woman who also takes her studies very seriously. She takes us on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land like none other. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a resourceful woman lead character. This book would be a great Mother/Daughter read. Mary at times feels awkward, has to hide who she really is, never says no to a difficult task and impresses the men in the tale with her knife-throwing skills. She is a good role model for today.

I love Mary Russell

Well done adventures with distinctly voiced characters. With listening to many a time and time again!

As enjoyable and well crafted as the Jack Aubrey series

I have been a great fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories from way back when but this series with Mary Russell has brought back even more enjoyment of listening to a different perspective to the Sherlock Holmes stories. And I thank you for this.

The narrator does an amazing job of presenting the characters in this book.
