She was the first chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights, which advocated for the civil liberties of all people, particularly the poor, minorities, and disadvantaged. She helped push the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through passage in the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. For her forthright humanitarian endeavors, Eleanor Roosevelt was voted as ninth in Gallup’s 1999 list of the Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century. On June 5, 2023, the United States Mint issued a quarter honoring Eleanor Roosevelt and her work on the landmark Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
