After the summer ends and Smoky Point enters the fall season, hunters discover a dead body in the Smoky Point woods reserve when coyotes dig up an arm. Claire has the site excavated and is shocked to discover the naked body of a very old man.
Claire brings in the FBI and State police to help identify the old man. Who turns out to be the older brother of Jewish Mafia leader, Abby Kleinfeld, a resident of Long Island.
Kleinfeld identifies the body as being his older brother, Rabbi Ira Kleinfeld from Brooklyn, who had been visiting Kleinfeld several weeks earlier when he disappeared one morning. For weeks, Kleinfeld was waiting for a message from other organized crime bosses in New York, but none were forthcoming.
Claire’s friendship with Abby Kleinfeld goes back more than a year when he used his influence to help her solve a murder. His son, David, is secretly in love with Claire and as she delves into finding who murdered Ira, a romance blossoms between the two.
With the help of the FBI, state police and county sheriff, Claire identifies six powerful organized crime bosses who want Abby Kleinfeld dead so they can take control of his vast empire.
Slowly, Claire puts the pieces of the puzzle together and realizes that powerful Russian mob boss Ivan Kostov is the man behind the murder of Ira Kleinfeld. Mistaken for Abby, Ira was kidnapped when he went for a walk.
Before Claire can get to Kostov, Claire herself is kidnapped when she is apprehended by Kostov’s men while on her daily jog.
Claire wakes up in an empty basement with David, who is severely beaten. They spend twenty-four hours together, trapped in the basement before Kotov’s men come for them and bring then to Kotov.
Kotov has a proposal for Claire. She will deliver Abby Kleinfeld to him in exchange for David’s life. If she doesn’t deliver Kleinfeld, then the man she loves and plans to marry dies.
