Walter Bowart (1939-2007) was a journalist and a prominent figure in the New York City counter-culture of the 1960s. He was influential in promoting intellectual freedom through his work as editor of The East Village Other and through his Freedom of Thought Foundation.

Bowart's Operation Mind Control: The Cryptocracy's Plan to Psychocivilize You is a classic in the annals of conspiracy research. It is a disturbing account of the secret use of mind control technology, by a secret government (or "cryptocracy"), with an aim to pacifying whole populations and furthering private global-investment strategies. Meticulously researched and well-written, it remains - even today - one of the best books on the topic.

The original version of Operation Mind Control was the first book printed in the United States to explore the murky world of CIA mind control. This theme is common in Hollywood movies today but, at the time (1978), the topic was highly charged, top-secret, and extremely dangerous to research. The book quickly disappeared, because the CIA did not want the public to know the extent and details of its mind control programs (they actually bought up all of the copies that had been printed - an entire warehouse full).

Content:

The subject matter was fascinating, and the coverage was detailed. In some cases, the details would cause my stomach to churn. This is the “Researcher’s Edition”. Since I’ve not seen any other editions, I can’t compare it to earlier editions. Other reviews say this is outdated but still very relevant. That is very accurate. I believe the 1st edition of this book came out in 1978 and this “Researcher’s Edition” is circa 1994 or 1995. Regardless, the information is powerful and relevant. For me, it was surprising in that it shook my beliefs in some topics on which I hold strong opinions.

Pros:

- Lots of details with comprehensive follow-through– names, dates, situations all tied together to form the fabric of a disturbing story that has been going on for a very long time.
- The narrator did a very good job especially considering much of the material is very dark.
- Would likely listen to again in the near future, but I need some time to digest this first.

Cons:

- I’ve not run into this before with an audiobook before, but there were times when the narrator would stop mid-sentence and re-read as though he felt he made a mistake or wanted to read it better. This doesn’t happen often enough to be a turn-off, but I would have thought these kinds of things would have been edited out.

Overall:

Go in to this with a strong stomach and an open mind. This is not to say you must believe everything the author has laid out, but even if a fraction of this is true, we should be frightened, but enlightened enough to see through facades all around us and motivated enough to work to change this silent but deadly blight forced upon humanity.

Interesting, frightening, and well researched

The shear amount of knowledge, and depth in which each topic is covered is astounding. Phenomenal!
