Guy de Maupassant is widely regarded as the father of the modern short story. As his 13 volumes of short stories attest, he was a prolific writer of this form. He had a simple, efficient style of writing and, like Anton Chekhov, found inspiration for his stories in the daily lives of humans, which often reveal our darker nature. Cate does a nice job of narration. It's interesting to hear a woman's voice compared to a man's in reading GdM. The stories are not listed, which I believe Aud should add in the introduction. Story 2., Mother Sauvage is magnificent. Story 1., The Colonels Idea, a story of how much French soldiers love French women.
