Mike Ellis is a rookie cop in a rural Catskill Mountain town working in the shadow of his dead father, the former Chief of Police. When a true crime podcaster comes to town, Mike is drawn into a cold case murder investigation that his father began. As Mike begins to sort through the case, he stumbles into a modern-day murder case that has similar elements.

A young woman. She’s been strangled. A cop named Ellis. And of course, the Overlook.

Assigned to help the new investigation, Mike is pitted against his father’s former rival, a seasoned detective who has no use for him, and a burly cop’s son who wants to take his head off. In spite of the obstacles, Mike makes a tremendous breakthrough and cracks the cold case wide open.

With the help of his trusty partners and some old timers, Mike discovers that his father had kept something hidden that, now discovered, sparks national attention. But as the spotlight shines on the past, Mike loses grip on the promises he made in the present, with dire consequences.

Can Mike reconcile the relationship with a father he doesn’t truly know and solve two murders separated by four decades?

This was my first experience with this author's work. I was entertained by the story; however, I thought the details were confusing. I understood that there was a mystery and there needed to be some red herrings, but some of the resolution didn't seem to follow a logical path. I liked Mike Ellis; however, I thought his character traits were too ephemeral. I thought Bobby Garrison's narration was entertaining. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

This book honestly left me feeling confused. I struggled to keep track of which character was leading the story, as the author jumped around frequently between perspectives. That constant shifting made the narrative feel disjointed, and I spent much of the book mentally scrambling to piece things together instead of getting immersed in the story. While there were interesting ideas present, the lack of clear focus made it a difficult listen for me.

This was such a great story. I loved how everything sort of folded in and then unfolded. So ready for book 2! Mike has a way of endearing himself to those he meets. He also has a way of getting himself in to some sticky situations. Strap yourself in for a twisting mystery for some fun.

Bobby Garrison is my favorite male narrator.
