In the Territory of Oregon in 1858, the Sioux, Crow, Arapaho, and Shoshone tribes, ancient enemies, fought each other. They also attacked the US Cavalry guarding the Overland Trail. They raided Mormon pioneers and gold seekers traveling to the California goldfields. The Federal Government had also dispatched a third of the country’s army to subdue a nonexistent rebellion by the Mormons in the Territory of Utah. With the entire intermountain west up in arms, something had to give.

As the adopted son of the great Shoshone Chief Arimo, Connal Lee and his Shoshone spouses journeyed to Great Salt Lake City on a diplomatic mission. Governor Brigham Young had ordered all Mormons to evacuate south of Provo out of harm’s way of the invading army. Connal Lee rode past empty settlements until they reached the enormous walled city of Great Salt Lake City Fort. But things didn’t go as expected.
