During the Reconstruction period following the Civil War

Former slave Pad Pennywell had hopes of starting a new life with his wife, daughter, and adopted family in Texas. Little did Pad know that his life was about to be torn apart when his family is brutalized by a band of thieves and murderers.

On the Harrisonburg road, a stretch of trail that connects the Natchez Trace with the El Camino Real, Pad and his family are taken captive by John West, a psychopathic murderer whose charm and hypocrisy is only matched by his lust for blood and money. Pad's only hope for escape is a group of geriatrics, children, and a confederate veteran gunslinger he has befriended over his two years as West's slave. Dan Dean, the gunslinger, is desperately trying to redeem himself from the sins of his past.

Based on a true story.

I will treasure this story. My family more than likely travelled the Natchez Trace, from Alabama to Texa, circa 1851. The story resonates with me.

A wonderful accounting of tragic times.

Great story about the heroism and sacrifice of a former slave Pad Pennywell and the other brave men and women standing up for justice in the post civil war South.
