Review: Curvy Girls Can’t… by Sadie King

I don’t even know where to BEGIN.

I picked this up thinking I’d get a body-positive, empowering romance. What I got instead was a chaotic fever dream of secondhand embarrassment, cringe, and scenes that made me physically recoil.

The main character? Supposed to be relatable. Instead, I spent half the book yelling “WHY would you say that out loud?!” into the void. Every awkward interaction felt like watching someone trip in slow motion and then continue falling for 300 pages.

And the romance? Oh no. No no no. The chemistry felt less like sparks and more like two damp socks rubbing together. I kept waiting for depth — emotional development — something heartfelt. Instead, I got dramatic internal monologues and decisions so baffling I needed to pause and stare at the wall.

Some scenes were written in a way that was clearly meant to be steamy or intense… but instead I felt like I accidentally walked into someone else’s diary and now I can’t unsee what I read. There were moments that made me scrunch my face like I just bit into spoiled milk.

The dialogue? Cringe.
The misunderstandings? Exhausting.
The pacing? Why is everything happening and also nothing at the same time??

I love body-positive stories. I wanted to root for this so badly. But instead of empowerment, I got melodrama and situations that felt uncomfortable in a way that wasn’t meaningful — just awkward.

If you enjoy messy, dramatic, emotionally chaotic romance where everyone desperately needs therapy and better communication skills… you might survive this.

Me? I need to cleanse my brain with something wholesome and emotionally stable.
