She does Britain's dirty work, but this time she needs help. Beatrix Rose, meet John Milton....

Beatrix Rose has a knack for making the British government's problems go away. When the assassin is sent to Venezuela to track down a missing scientist, she meets a contact who knows the lay of the land: none other than John Milton.

As the state-sanctioned assassin and the special forces soldier team up in South America, they'll do more than capture a missing scientist. They'll discover a secret that will change Beatrix's life forever....

Phoenix is a short story that unites two landmark thriller characters in a single tale. If you like ruthless assassins, fast-moving plots and Jack Reacher-style action, then you'll love USA Today best-selling author Mark Dawson's latest short.

Though the narrator was very good, the story itself was too short and left too many questions unanswered. I'd read the mixed reviews on Dawson's characters so I've been slow to really get into his writing. I think this is the second novella...first one was about Milton. I like that there's lots of action and a strong female lead with a heart. However, the choice to give no "real" details about whether "Phoenix" is a what or a who has the feel of a serial comic book or TV series. The saying "always leave them wanting" seems to be the author's Rule of Thumb, yet because these are rightfully compared to a Jack Reacher style character, it's truly not necessary. Fully fleshing out the story would actually benefit this particular concept. People like me will continue to read because we like the characters. I think I'll wait until I can get the entire series for 1 credit. Now that would be exciting!

This is a really good short story. Lots of action, excellent characters and a great narrator. Love these little diamonds in the rough.

Predictable but good

Hi Beatrix. Meet John. You will come to depend on him, but he sure made it hard at first didn’t he. I loved Phoenix and how these two first met. John already deep in his struggles, Beatrix was less than impressed by this soldier. He may be pretty on paper, but he wasn’t anything special in person. Until he was. Then she understood why he was such a prize for Group 15 to acquire. This fast paced novella packs quite the punch and tells a very important story to this close knit friendship.

In the end what was the research about Why was the scientist picked up. Was the child a product of the research ?

Interesting plot with action and surprise but felt the end lacked the info that gives a mission to the plot.

“Phoenix” by Mark Dawson features a British sanctioned assassin who quietly makes political problems go away. I do love a female assassin story!

Beatrix Rose is sent to Venezuela to find a missing scientist. There, she partners with another assassin, John Milton.

Short story even shorter, in her search for the missing scientists, she finds a secret that will alter Beatrix’s life.

This is a fast-moving story, only 2 hours. It’s perfect for a long drive. I listened to the audible production narrated by Jane Slavin.
