To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

Torn between fear and something that resembles love, Cassie wrestles with questions she never dreamed she would face: How can she leave? Then again, how can she stay?

The author is amazing her description of characters and scenery make you feel and see them as though you were there. The story brings you to a subject that is not easy to hear about and for me fortunately not one I ever experienced. This is the third book I have read by her and each one has kept me riveted. I would recommend this and any of her other books as a wonderful reading choice.

Jodi is one of the best authors out there, and this was a very real-life subject that hit very close to home for me. She does a great job with the storyline and covering the topic of abuse from all angles. The downside to this book is one of the narrators. If Amanda had read the entire book, I would have enjoyed it better. It is a shame since it is a great book. You might be better off reading it rather than listening to it. I hate to say that, but I had to force myself to finish it. I don't like to feel that way about any book.

Great story bad narrator

I loved this book. Anytime a book can bring me into a dream world, it's a success in my mind. I was dreaming about this storyline and I know the attention to detail in creating the characters was carefully placed. I really want to see this as a movie now. She captivates you with the unfortunate reality of an abusive relationship. The twists and turns, the undertone of control, and desire to be needed were all present. I'd happily read this again in the future.

Excellent Read!

I always love Jodi Picoult’s books, but I have to say that this was definitely not a favorite. I kept waiting for the story to evolve, but it never did. The ending worked for me, but there was nothing to figure out. It was not thought provoking the way her other books are. Although the book touched upon an important subject, the story itself was a bit empty. However, Jodi is still, and will always be one of my favorite authors.

Just okay

Once again she nails it like she has lived it! Lots of subjects can be told from actual events and passed off as novels and then there's Jodi, somehow someway she manages to envelope the reader into every story every life and make you ache for her characters... nail bitting suspense eith heart felt issues of life... by far my favorite author.

hard hitting as always
