I may fool myself with other prayer keys, but not this one. I may tell myself I want God’s will when I have my own ideas about what his will should be. I may tell myself I’m sincere when I have ulterior motives. I may tell myself I’m praying for God’s glory, or I’m praying in humility while secretly hoping someone will notice. I may tell myself I’m praying in faith, not doubting, while I’m afraid to admit my doubts, even to myself. I may tell myself I’m praying as the spirit leads, when I already know where I want him to lead.
When we pray earnestly, we pray with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, as the spirit leads. Our hearts and minds will not wander. (That’s a too-frequent occurrence for me while praying.) We won’t be concerned with time. We’ll be oblivious to boredom. I may fool myself with other prayer keys, but not this one.
