Rhys’ trademark exploration of isolation and identity comes to the forefront as Marya navigates the seductive promises of passion and freedom, only to find herself ensnared in the complications of dependency and manipulation. The novel pulses with a sense of inevitability, as Marya’s yearning for independence collides with the dark realities of the world she inhabits.
