Ryōma! tells the life story of Sakamoto Ryōma, one of the great figures in the turmoil that engulfed Japan in the years before the 1868 Meiji Restoration. Amazingly accurate, and I have told my kids to read it.

Although a novel, this is an extremely accurate depiction on Sakamotosan's life and what he helped accomplish.
I am an American, but I lived in Kouchiken for three years. I've been to 桂浜 Katsura Hama, and walked where he walked. My wife is from Susaki. This spoke to me very deeply. There is some literary license, but this is severally accurate. I lived in Aki. I know these places and I know the local history. This is accurate. When you read this, you will know a - from a foreigner point of view- a little known footprint; but the effect of Sakamotosan's efforts changed the course of Japan.
