Eight hundred years have passed since King Connavar of the Rigante and his bastard son, Bane, defeated the invading army of Stone. In that time, Connavar has become a legend, and the Rigante have lost the freedom so many gave their lives to preserve. A conquered people, they live and die under the iron rule of the Varlish, their culture all but destroyed.

One woman remains who follows the ancient paths once trod by the Rigante. She is the Wyrd of Wishing Tree Wood, and she alone knows the nature of the evil soon to be unleashed on a doomed and unsuspecting world. In a perilous land, facing an uncertain destiny, she pins her initial hopes on two men: Jaim Grymauch, the giant Rigante fighter, a man haunted by his failure to save the friend he loved from betrayal, and Kaelin Ring, a youth whose deadly talents will earn him the enmity of all Varlish. One will become the Ravenheart, an outlaw leader whose daring exploits will inspire the Rigante. The other will forge a legend and light the fires of rebellion.

The Wyrd knows that ultimately all hopes will rest on a third man. Of the bloodline of Connavar the King, he will need to overcome generations of fear and hatred if he is to achieve his destiny. For he is a Varlish nobleman, and - worse - the son of the Rigante's greatest enemy....

don't miss this one! as with all Gemmell's books, it pulls you in from the first wordd and keeps you there to the last. the narrator is excellent! ive seen reviews castigating her for being a female narrator and i was hesitant but she did an absolutely wonderful job. her range of voice was excellent and all the charactors were unique. A truly great book!

fantastic!

Mostly writing this to offset that poor guy who thought the Rigante books should be read by a ‘big powerful man’ or whatever nonsense. The reader here has a wonderful voice that sounds like the Morrigu herself telling the greatest Rigante tale about the Greatest Rigante. Her Scottish brogue is just amazing and created such flavour for the story.
Finally, Jaim Grymauch is one of my favourite fictional characters in all of books. He’s got a soul as large as the world, and makes me a better person when I remember him. He’s real for me, despite being nothing but a character made of words. What a wonderful book this is.

An amazing story by a master storyteller, read by the perfect narrator.

A cracking, moving Gemmell story.
Sadly, as with other Rigante audiobooks, the cast voice performer, although highly talented, is hugely miscast, as she is unable to convincingly do male voices. Where they should be redolent with depth and testosterone, they are high pitched, and afflicted by the bizarre choice of a pseudo-West Country accent instead of a far more appropriate Scottish accent.
As an experienced voice actor myself, I have a feeling that the voice performer here was badly let down by the producer/editor. Many of the errors snd bad decisions would have been avoided or caught by a good one.

Yet another Gemmell masterpiece, here sadly damaged by voice performance choices

Great series highly recommend. I’ve listened to many audiobooks and I agree with other reviews. The narrator can make or break a very good (and even great) story. Thankfully this narrator is one of the best

Narrator is awesome

This series makes me tear up with joy and pride. There are simple lessons of true heroics and morality that are so well illustrated to be able to touch the soul.
