When Gilly said that to Seth in England, he was hers, but then he couldn’t bridge the gap.
Reasonably well educated back in America, just enough money in the bank, healthy, Seth assumed he was as able as most to deal with life’s details. Furious events in the news might be threatening -- but outside his circle of concern. At sixty-five, not Jewish, he certainly didn’t expect antisemitism to invade his circle of concern.
Seth was raised very vaguely Christian, not even aware he was seriously put off by all religion until he met Gilly Sears in England.
Then events began to unfurl in America and England. Seth’s American ex-wife was an atheist and Jewish. And it turned out that Jewish part made their youngest daughter a target.
