November 2009. An emaciated young lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, is led to a freezing isolation cell in a Moscow prison, handcuffed to a bed rail, and beaten to death by eight police officers. His crime? To testify against the Russian Interior Ministry officials who were involved in a conspiracy to steal $230 million of taxes paid to the state by one of the world's most successful hedge funds. Magnitsky's brutal killing has remained uninvestigated and unpunished to this day. His farcical posthumous show-trial brought Putin's regime to a new low in the eyes of the international community.

Red Notice is a searing expose of the wholesale whitewash by Russian authorities of Magnitsky's imprisonment and murder, slicing deep into the shadowy heart of the Kremlin to uncover its sordid truths. Bill Browder - the hedge fund manager who employed Magnitsky - takes us on his explosive journey from the heady world of finance in New York and London in the 1990s, through his battles with ruthless oligarchs in the turbulent landscape of post-Soviet Union Moscow, to his expulsion from Russia on Putin's orders. Browder's graphic portrait of the Russian government as a criminal enterprise wielding all the power of a sovereign state illuminates his personal transformation from financier to human rights activist, campaigning for justice for his late lawyer and friend.

With fraud, bribery, corruption, and torture exposed at every turn, Red Notice is a shocking but true political roller-coaster that plays out in the highest echelons of Western power.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Lots of reasons. It's a good story, and the narration is excellent. It's educational - I knew that Putin was a tough former KGB officer but I didn't realize how ruthless he is in protecting his own personal economic interests.

What does Adam Grupper bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Good job at voicing the different characters, and bringing out the drama without going overboard.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Reads like good thriller novel but it's true

It surely does, you will want to listen to the whole story in one sitting. The more realistic part is that the story is real and sadly portraits the current affairs of Russia and many other countries. If you don't know about the Magnitsky Act and who Sergai Magnitsky is, you will. You will experience the lawlessness of Russia, how greedy the police and judges are, meet wealthy Russian oligarchs who conspire along with Putin to capture and maintain a large portion of the wealth of Russia, and suppress common citizens. The book represents courage, tenacity and gumption of Bill Browder, who would not give up to find out the truth. You will be mesmerized. A great read, and a valuable story to read.

Truth wrapped up in a novel

What did you love best about Red Notice?

I was intrigued with the story, although complex, it is laid out very well, and it is harrowing. Russia under Putin is not a cheery world and anyone trying to do business there should think three times over. The levels of corruption are astonishing and I truly pity the average Russian who is back to just trying to lay low so he/she can survive. Bill Browder's real-life experience makes this a tremendous period piece and I felt like I had learned more about this area of the world.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The narrator's voice works perfectly with the story and he carries it off well.

What does Adam Grupper bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I just seem to follow books better through an audio channel than visual and I was able to keep the characters straight in my head.

If you could give Red Notice a new subtitle, what would it be?

Wake Up America!

Any additional comments?

I learned much more about the misery of life in today's Russia and Americans might do well to understand just how powerful and corrupt Putin is today. Can we say Stalin?

Fascinating tale about corruption in modern Russia

This amazing story, especially considering the fact that it is true. it gives some major insights into the inner workings of the Russian government and the incorruptible character of Bill Browser on fighting that corruption. Altogether this is the best book I've read or listened to in years.

overwhelmingly awesome story

Bill Browser's book threw a figurative "bucket of cold water" in my face.

This book is a strong and well-written chronicle of events that have happened recently in Russia and the nerely helpless victims, and is a warning that similar events are still happening there.

Communism may be out of fashion, but the current Putin regime and its inhumane "police" and "courts" are every bit as savage and corrupt as the old Politburo regime.

Russia - Still corrupt and deadly
