When Muslim fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralize NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuver to cloak a crash military build-up. When Soviet tanks begin to roll, the West is caught off guard. What looks like a thrust turns into an all-out shooting war, possibly the climactic battle for control of the globe. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - Great story. Like most Clancy books there were some technical details, but not so many that you get lost in the weeds. In my opinion it is definitely one of the best of the Clancy books.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Definite page turner (if there were pages.) Once Clancy gets the background in place and the actions begins you are left anticipating what is going to happen next. You do not have to go too far into the book for the action of the story to get under way in full swing.

What does Michael Prichard bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Prichard did a good job narrating. I have never narrated a book, but I would imagine this would have been one of the tougher books to narrate. I think it would have been challenging due to the large number of characters involved in the story as well as the various nationalities.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The story made me want to.

Any additional comments?

The story may seem dated to some due the changing political scene since it was written. I was in the US military at the height of the Cold War and so everything in the story resonated with me and real and plausible. However, with the Russian incursion into the Crimea that has been the new lately, the story may not be a dated as one would have once thought.

Excellent Clancy Tale

If you could sum up Red Storm Rising in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, Technical, Action

What was one of the most memorable moments of Red Storm Rising?

The End

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration was dreadful. Pritchard routinely put me to sleep. There was a great deal I didn't like about how he handled the book or at least was directed in. A large issue was cutting between scenes. The book is so intense and so technical that he didn't try to accentuate when scenes were changing. Since he didn't have a consistent Russian accent half the time I was listening lost what front he was talking about.

The book needs to be reread today and with a different director as well as voice. The novel wasn't done justice. First bad Audio book I've run into. Especially one with such a great story behind it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
