Mattie Carver's engagement party should have marked the start of her own personal fairy tale. But when her fiancé, Ben, is violently abducted the next morning, her desperate quest to find him rips her away from small-town life and reveals a shattering truth: magic is real - and Ben is hooked. It's not the stuff of storybooks. It's wildly addictive, capable of producing everything from hellish anguish to sensual ecstasy almost beyond human endurance.

Determined to find out who took Ben and why, Mattie immerses herself in a shadowy underworld and comes face-to-face with the darkly alluring Asa Ward, a rogue magic dealer, infamous hustler...and her missing fiancé's estranged brother. Asa has the power to sense magic, and he realizes Mattie is a reliquary, someone with the rare ability to carry magic within her own body, undetected. Asa agrees to help find Ben on one condition: Mattie must use her uncommon talent to assist his smuggling operations. Now, from magic-laced Vegas casinos to the netherworld clubs of Bangkok, Mattie is on a rescue mission. With Asa by her side, she'll face not only the supernatural forces arrayed against her but the all-too-human temptation that she fears she can't resist.

Decent Story

Yes,. I know it is urban fantasy an this genre is subject to the occasional risque scene, but the magic concept is really good with fewer dives into the sex (which one acknowledge is an aspect that has to be present). I really enjoyed as she dived headlong into this world and liked how she coped as she grasped new concepts. Carly is a great narrator and imparts personality to the individual characters. I am going to read the series to see more of this world and watch the storyline evolve.

Great concept,. sexual content sometimes distracts

I know it’s just me, but the ending turned out all wrong. A story of the strength of a woman’s love, misplaced on a deceptive jerk who ultimately trapped her using that love against her. The fiancé didn’t deserve her but won out anyway.

I guess I’ve seen this all too often in real life, and it always ends in disaster ultimately.

Let this be a lesson, don’t let love and the fantasy of what that love can be, blind you to the truth. Because one day you will have to face that truth, and by then it’s too late.

Side note; I won’t buy and listen to the rest of the series because, from the reviews, Mattie continues her blind naïveté refusing to open her eyes to truth. If she spent 1/2 of the effort she puts into holding onto her fantasy into Asa is would have a happy ending but she doesn’t. We read these novels for happy endings. We don’t want a pseudo non-fiction story taking us down a troubling path myself and others have seen in real life.

Perfectly read and acted but...
