Simon Epstein is a young man in Buffalo, NY who joins the Army in 1917, and is shipped to France to do his part in WWI. He is gassed, shot at by the Red Baron, and wounded. He comes home when the war is officially over, but the war isn't over for him.

He suffers from what is now called PTSD, but at that time, had no name. This is a story of young love, strong family ties, and heartbreaking loss caused by the war and the Spanish Flu. It's also a story of a love affair with "Those new-fangled contraptions," Model T Fords.
