Compared to other more long-lived political figures, Robert F. Kennedy’s career was brief. He first emerged on the national stage as attorney general under his brother, President John F. Kennedy. In this role, he became a vigorous advocate for civil rights and cracked down on organized crime by going after mob bosses and high-profile Mafia families. Following his brother’s assassination in 1963, RFK transitioned to a role in the Senate, representing New York. As a senator, he continued his crusade for social justice, and his concern and empathy for the marginalized endeared him to many Americans.

In 1968, RFK launched his own presidential campaign. His ability to connect with diverse groups of people—African Americans, Hispanics, working-class whites, and young people—set him apart as a unifying figure during a time of great division in the United States. More great things were likely to come had RFK’s life not been tragically cut short by an assassin’s bullet at age 42. Even so, with his drive and energy, Robert F.
