Rural Solutions for Homelessness gives you hope and a strategic plan to get started using best practices to meet homeless where they are with a hand up, not just a hand out, and to move people from “in-crisis” to “self-sufficiency.”
Rural Solutions for Homelessness is organized into two sections: 1) conversations with experts and 2) hidden opportunities.
SECTION 1 - Conversations with Experts addresses over 30 frequently asked questions (FAQs) from communities wanting to learn from our successes and mistakes. With over 30 years collective experience with solutions for rural homelessness in Southern Oregon, experts Chad McComas, Matt Vorderstrasse and Phil Johncock address a wide range of timely topics as research on rural homelessness, car parking, where to find staff, funding, starting from scratch, mitigating NIMBYism, social enterprises, battling food insecurity, and building a Stairway to Success.
SECTION 2 - Hidden Opportunities includes 24 tips and practical advice. Often communities struggle with homelessness-related “problems” without ever discovering that hidden beneath are also “big opportunities” for community engagement that often go unnoticed and ignored. You’ll learn about the well of homelessness, myths of homelessness, the “secret sauce” of successful programs, the tsunami wave of senior homelessness, why it takes all of us, and why getting a white vinyl fence made a huge difference for Hope Village.
