After the death of their mother, Eve and Meri Tolle realize that for the first time in their lives, they are going to have to take care of themselves. The sisters soon part ways. Meri heads for New York and Eve leaves their home in Illinois and finds a job working in a diner in South Dakota. One cold, wintery, night in January, Eve finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. She quickly flees to Montana to avoid anyone finding out about her involvement in what happened on that unfortunate night. She changes her name and begins a whole new life. Just when her life as Evelyn Taylor is coming together, she discovers that someone is looking for Eve Tolle. Is her sister, Meri, trying to find her, or does someone know what really happened on that January night in South Dakota?
