In his bid to unit Hexia, Iohn, the Lord Protector, is caught between open rebellion against his nephew, Otho, the minor First Lord, now fast approaching the age of majority, or submission which will loose him power, influence, even his life. Then from the North comes a young woman, claiming to be Princess Margarita of Sudka, sworn enemy of his friend, Sacheverel and his country, Gordella. Why has she come? Is she friend or foe? Should he give way to the Gordellans demands for her to be handed over for execution? Before these questions can be answered, the Sudkan helps Iohn avoid the fatal summons from Otho, so he must decide whether the Sudkan is just an earthly distraction from his troubles - or the heaven sent help he has been praying for.
