Sonnie Beverly draws on her experiences with African-American church groups to create realistic characters. In this debut novel, three black women from one neighborhood take different paths to better themselves.

It's in her small Virginia hometown where Zakia experiences the success she's always wanted and the change that threatens it. For her friend Nikki, this close-knit village inspires a new life, in which a younger man and unexpected conflicts test her mettle. And for young LaKishsa, fresh from the hood, here is where she grapples with her past and plans her future.

I had a hard time finishing this book because it was so slow and somewhat unrealistic to me. I did not like all the references to church and God. How are these women supposed to be so godly but they are divorced from their mates. How is divorce what the church would want for them. The second story took the cake because to me this woman was not making good decisions at all. I will not read another book by this author.

Dull

The first short story was mediocre. The 2nd one was just irritating with "hallelujah" as every other word and the 3rd had far too many characters for any substance. Overall, the tempo of the storylines were excruciatingly slow. The only bright spot in this dreary audiobook was the narrator.

The description says this story is realistic...I don’t want to give it away but it wasn’t to me. There were 3 parts and the first two fit together but the last one, I just couldn’t get through. I skipped to the end and that was the most believable part. It did not fit with the story at all. It was also predictable. Each part ended the same way. I wanted to enjoy this so bad. I sadly did not.
