From the OR to the ICU, Dr. David Alfery brings you into a hidden world of medicine that has never before been seen. You will witness the exhilaration a physician feels when a life is miraculously saved, the terror when a life is on the line, the shock of an unexpected demise, the grace patients evidence when facing the end of life, the anguish one suffers when a family member is perilously close to dying, and much more.

Saving Grace illuminates what really goes on in the life and death struggles in acute care medical settings. As a result, you will view your own doctor in a new light. Saving Grace will broaden your perspective on death, and it will bring into focus the fact that, at some point, we all will die. More importantly, it will forever change the way you live.

Dr. Alfery has written a book documenting his career as a physician who spent most of his time as a Cardiovascular Anesthesiologist. The author describes patients he has cared for. Most patients lived, some died, but their situations are described in eloquent prose. While everyone can read the book, it should be mandatory for healthcare workers and students. I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author. He has a beautiful delivery. Dr. Alfery calls for the respect of all patients, regardless of background, and helps himself and, thus, the reader deal with the death of several patients.

Dr. Alfery attempts to define the medical terminology he uses in the book. With no healthcare experience, the reader may miss some nuances of his presentation. This is a serious and factual book. There is no “House of God” or “MASH” moment. It is, however, a tribute to the healthcare workers fighting for the lives of their patients.

Dr. Alfery’s wonderful narrative of a world often cloaked in mystery to so many reveals the depth of humanity experienced by so many in the health care fields as they navigate the precarious edges of life and death. Being able to hear his heartfelt words in his own voice emphasizes the range of emotions experienced in his long career. I was riveted by his style and ability to illuminate the often mysterious world of anesthesia care.

I am a lawyer and my work touches on different aspects of our health care system. I have read many books by physicians and surgeons. Hands down, Saving Grace is the best I have read. The author is also the narrator. His voice matches his words and shows how he is caring, concerned, and committed to each of his patients regardless of wealth, status, or background. I learned a great deal from this gem about the practice of anesthesiology but more important, this book opened my eyes to living and dying. The stories and patient relationships he describes often made me a bit misty eyed. it is reassuring to know that there are Dr. Alfery’s out there who committed to doing what is right.

Thank you.
