The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books began in 1996 with a simple goal: to bring together the people who create books with the people who love to read them. The festival was an immediate success and has become the largest and most prestigious book festival in the country, attracting more than 130,000 book lovers each year.

Scott Timberg covered West Coast books and authors as a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times. He is currently a freelance writer and also co-edited The Misread City: New Literary Los Angeles with Dana Gioia.

Joe Haldeman has written nearly two dozen novels, including Marsbound, Forever Peace and The Forever War. He has won three Rhysling Awards for science fiction poetry. Haldeman's latest book is Old Twentieth.

Harry Harrison, an acclaimed science-fiction writer, served in the military as a gunnery instructor during World War II. He has published more than 40 novels including the West of Eden trilogy, the popular "Stainless Steel Rat" series, Make Room! Make Room! and the graphic novel Death World.

Robert Silverberg has written more than 160 science fiction novels and nonfiction books. He has won the prestigious Nebula Award five times and a Hugo Award on four separate occasions. Silverberg's most recent book is Dying Inside.
