This was a fairly decent introduction to the history of Scotland that most pretty quickly from prehistoric to the industrial age. The narration was easy to listen to and entertaining, if a bit like a used car sales pitch, and was for the most part accurate in the broad strokes (although some details might be debatable). There certainly was not much detailed research presented to defend the narrative. There also was not much in the myth and legend department aside from some prehistoric and bronze age speculation (which was a pity as that would have added so much more to this very short book).

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was a very good dictionary type primer on the people, places and lore of Scotland. None of it went into much detail, but I think as a first encounter with the topics,it is good.Narration by Christian Neale was well done. I was given this book free for an honest review.

This audiobook was a fantastic listen from start to finish. If you enjoy Scottish history, legends, and the atmosphere of the Highlands, this delivers a little bit of everything.

What I liked most is that it doesn’t just throw dates and names at you. It tells the story of Scotland in a way that feels alive. From the clans and Highland warriors to the battles, kings, and myths, it keeps you engaged the entire time.

The sections on William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and the Jacobites were especially interesting, but I also enjoyed the folklore and legends woven throughout the audiobook. The mix of real history and myth gives it a strong sense of identity and atmosphere.

At just over 3 hours, it’s a very approachable listen and packed with a surprising amount of information without ever feeling dry or overly academic.

If you’re interested in Scotland, its people, its legends, and the events that shaped it, this audiobook is absolutely worth picking up.

This is an interesting look at the history of Scotland and how it became a land of its own. There is a lot of information on clans and rulers and the dates that they were in power. I found this as more of a text book than an entertaining listen. I did enjoy learning how Scotland became what it is now but would have enjoyed a book that was not so much just names and dates and had a bit more of the legends and myths as the title states. Narrator Christian Neale does a good job with the narration.
