NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The ultimate guide to writing a great screenplay and building a screenwriting career, from the creators of the hit podcast Scriptnotes—featuring contributions from film and TV legends Christopher Nolan, Greta Gerwig, Michael Schur, Rian Johnson, Aline Brosh McKenna, Ashley Nicole Black, Seth Rogen, and many more.

With decades of Hollywood experience, John August and Craig Mazin know what it takes to write a successful script for the screen. And over the past twelve years, they’ve analyzed generation-defining movies and shared their wisdom on their popular podcast Scriptnotes, inviting experts in the craft to discuss everything that makes a script shine.

Now, in their first book, August and Mazin draw on more than a thousand hours of Scriptnotes conversations, as well as their own storied careers, to help readers begin, refine, and sell their own scripts. Part writing class, part informational interview with the best creators in the business, this essential book shares tips on:

The Basics—including the rules of screenwriting and when to break them
The Craft—including how to create a compelling story with captivating protagonists, worthy antagonists, and a sound structure

I have listened to literally every episode of the show and still found this book useful — in terms of craft, business, and emotional housekeeping. Thank you for this generous gift of insight!

Practical, inspiring, and fun!!!

Love the bit about how the producers notice the pattern of bad scripts breaking the rules, but the breaking the rules part isn’t necessarily what makes it a bad script. Since the best scripts break the rules as well.

So good I’ll forgive them for including Samantha bee

in John and Craig’s own voices, as well as the voices of the guest contributors. Otherwise, this is a phenomenal book about screenwriting. An instant classic.

This would have been much better…

I mainly bought the audio book as I had listened in the past to a lot of scriptnotes' podcasts, which I found wonderful (I am not a writer). I had a bit my doubt about having to listen to a different voice.

In the end I highly recommend the audio book / book. Clearly a lot of work went into making this book, and I came to really appreciate the narrator's voice and the aggregated perspective.

I found myself at the end of the book, suprised I already listened to more then 9 hours. It was a really nice journey.

Thanks to John and Craig for all their podcast and insights into crafting a good story.

This book is really well crafted
