The mermaid queen is dying, and Kiera’s in line for the crown.

When Kiera left her life in Marmor, the underground mermaid queendom located in the Bermuda Triangle, she forwent her tail and traded it for legs. Now, engaged to the man of her dreams, the sea calls with news that threatens to turn the tide.

Kiera doesn’t want to give up the life she’s created for herself, but her mother’s illness draws her back to the sea of grief and to the world she left behind.

She’s forced to decide which is stronger: her inheritance in the sea or her new life on land.

I loved the narrator! It was a simple, but sweet story. I loved the characters and how it stressed the importance of family. I will definitely be reading more by this author!

This is definitly a heavy feelings book. My daughter actually asked, "Why are you listening to this? It's so sad!" I really related to the main character, having to watch her mom fade from a sickness that they couldn't cure. This is a story of grief, duty, sacrifice, and finding happiness in the aftermath. The story is heavy, but the hope at the end, while only briefly shown, is all the more beautiful for it.

The narration was great! The narrator did a great job bringing the main character's inner struggles to life.

A beautiful story of the hope that comes after grief

Possible spoilers. I’ll try to be vague, but the plot may come through anyway.

I'm conflicted on this one. I’m not sure if I liked this story or not. It held my attention and the world and characters were interesting (not sure if the author has other stories set in this world), but I am baffled by the choice the MC made. The narrative does not provide a compelling or convincing reason why the MC pivots the way she does. She just . . . does. It felt like it came out of the blue (maybe being a short story contributed to that). Even more, once the MC made her choice, she doesn’t seem to care at all about the option she didn’t choose, even though everything that came before suggested otherwise.

The narration was well done.

Wow. Just wow. I did not expect this book to be so amazing! The first line blew me out of the water! “A jeweled noose” was such a hilarious way to describe an engagement ring!

Some novellas seem to be packing a huge story into a short booklet, but not this one. It was perfect! The plot, the characters, especially the world! I absolutely looove the worldbuilding in this! It was so vivid and enticing. And I love how pearl is used as a building material. You never think of the ocean as being rich, but with all those ships sinking throughout history, the reality is that the ocean is probably the richest kingdom on earth!

I loved Kira so much. I loved how we could feel her emotions so deep, even though it was painful.
I really appreciate that the author summed up this story well and did not leave us on a cliffhanger.

My only complaint about this story is I need to read more books in this world now!! :)

I listened to this book on 1.2 speed.

The narration was phenomenal. Kasey’s voice was perfect for this story, and I love how she portrayed Kira and the other characters in this novella.

Romance: a couple kisses
Gore: none
Violence: none

*SPOILERS BELOW*
I have mixed feelings about her choice to leave Dylan. It does make sense, but at the same time I am so heartbroken for him and Kira. That is such a painful thing to go through.
I am happy with how the story ended overall though. I wouldn’t change a thing!

An emotional roller coaster!

🌊 If you’re craving a complete story but only have a sliver of time, this one is perfect. Sea of Sorrow is a very short, very immersive fantasy that somehow packs rich world-building, romance, and family drama into just a handful of pages.

We follow Kiera—a princess in hiding who traded her tail for legs—as she’s pulled back to the underwater mermaid queendom she left behind. With her mother, the queen, dying and the crown calling her name, Kiera faces a heartbreaking choice: return to the sea or hold on to the life she’s created on land.

Secret identities, family sacrifice, emotional tension, and stunning undersea atmosphere… all wrapped in a quick read that still feels complete. A perfect pick for when you want a fast fantasy escape that delivers. 💙✨
