When Mrs. Dashwood is forced by an avaricious daughter-in-law to leave the family home in Sussex, she takes her three daughters to live in a modest cottage in Devon. For Elinor, the eldest daughter, the move means a painful separation from the man she loves, but her sister Marianne finds in Devon the romance and excitement which she longs for. The contrasting fortunes and temperaments of the two girls as they struggle to cope in their different ways with the cruel events which fate has in store for them are portrayed by Jane Austen with her usual irony, humour, and profound sensibility.©2005 Naxos Audiobooks Ltd. Juliet Stevenson's narration of Jane Austen is pitch-perfect! She captures the spirit of prose and voices of the character's flawlessly. The only one of Austen's books not available with her narration is Pride and Prejudice. They need to fix that.

Outstanding narrator!

The reader was wonderful at creating characters with her voice. Jane Austen's words are perfect and funny and so precise. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Perfect Austen

I truly enjoy Austen's novels and having it read by Ms. Stevenson adds to the enjoyment. If I remember correctly, Ms. Stevenson played Fanny Dashwood in a film version and made you want to hate Fanny forever : ). A great combination to be sure!

A high standard for all novels : ).

Have you listened to any of Juliet Stevenson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I chose this audiobook because of my love for Juliet Stevenson's reading of "Middlemarch". Her ability to read the varying characters of the book, and of course her British accent, are a perfect fit. She even does convincing voices for elderly men. I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had not listened to it immediately following "Middlemarch"- which, if you like this, I would absolutely recommend. In comparison, I felt the characters here were somewhat lacking in the compelling depth of Eliot's novel.

Solid audiobook
