This entertaining introduction to Shakespeare's work weaves biographical information with excerpts from 33 of his plays. Informative, well-researched commentary, written by two Royal Shakespeare Company actors, provides a glimpse of the man and little-known lore about his work.Public Domain (P)1998, 2003 CSA Word Drama & Plays Shakespeare European Drama World Literature Ancient, Classical & Medieval Literature

Critic reviews

"Hampton and Weston avoid an overly scholarly approach and present Shakespeare as flesh and blood....Dench is of course splendid....these solid vocal cords will melt listeners, thaw them, and resolve them into dewy delight." (The Philadelphia News)

the selections from the various plays were well chosen and well narrated, but the performances by judi drnch and Timothy West worked perfectly to bring out the Bard's genius, as well as their own.

With Dame Judi Dench as the female voice throughout, this audiobook could only be rated as excellent. She could read the toilet paper wrap and people would pay to hear it. The context of the book and the history of his plays is of great interest and done quite well.

I literally cannot wait to hear this masterpiece again. What a treasure of phenomenal texts. It is read most beautifully by some of the finest actors. the explanations are an eye-opener to anyone either new to Shakespeare or an old lover of Shakespeare. I can't recommend this enough
