Shane works with her mother and their ghost dogs, tracking down missing persons even when their families can’t afford to pay. Their own family was displaced from their traditional home years ago following a devastating flood—and the loss of Shane’s father and her grandparents. They don’t think they’ll ever get their home back.

Then Shane’s mother and a local boy go missing after a strange interaction with a fairy ring. Shane, her brother, her friends, and her lone, surviving grandparent—who isn’t to be trusted—set off on the road to find them. But they may not be anywhere in this world—or this place in time. No matter what it takes or where it takes her, Shane is going to find them.

Darcie Little Badger’s Elatsoe launched her career, and in the years since has become a beloved favorite. This prequel, centered on Ellie’s grandmother, deepens and expands Darcie’s one-of-a-kind world and introduces us to another cast of characters that will wend their way around listeners’ hearts.

Intriguing and believable characters in a fantastical version of our world. The blend of realistic life situations with the Fey, time travel, and the underworld is at turns depressing and amazing. The thoughts about the things we lose over time are so poignant. Narrator did an outstanding job. Strongly recommend this book and hope to see much more from this author.

A fascinating prequel

This story has so many disparate parts that are so well connected, it’s difficult to describe how good it is without wandering to another subject. The good stuff includes, The presence of multigenerational native American relationships that provide a stable base for the main character, catastrophic loss of some of those family members with resulting in break up and hardship for the main character her brother and her mother as they are taken advantage of by unscrupulous non-native neighbors, good supportive friendships between same gender teenagers, ghost search and rescue dog connected with the main character, a search and rescue trip to the underworld to find mom and another missing person (the underworld includes prehistoric mammals and other ghosts).

See what I mean? All this good stuff wrapped together. It’s like reading a slightly twisted friendship bracelet.
