It’s an amazing thing to get a fresh perspective by reaching back nearly a century. Yet Hart’s insights are timeless and contain points not seen in numerous extant Sherman biographies which continue to churn out the same ideas that have been hashed over many times. Additionally, Hart’s broad, deep knowledge of military history affords many comparisons with campaigns past, and allows for analysis of strategy rather than simple recounting of events. However, his treatment of Sherman’s post-war life, which contains many interesting events, is rather thin.

I get it — a British author requires a British reader. But the listening would’ve been much easier to understand had an American been recruited for the US edition of this book, eliminating differing pronunciation and accent.

Recommended for those who want deeper understanding of Sherman’s life and times.

Lidell-Hart’s revealing of Sherman’s growth as a general and person was outstanding. His own personal experience as a soldier gave him the ability to recognize Sherman’s genius not only as a military strategist but also as a psychologist.

Excellent evaluation of the growth of a person

This was an interesting book on Sherman.

I picked it up due to my reading of Ryan Holiday's "Ego is the Enemy", and I was expecting a more comprehensive biography of one of the most underrated figures of the Civil War.

This is a more in-depth look at the Civil War with a little bit of the before and after of Sherman's life. However, overall, it is a surprisingly engaging book that really delves into the mind of W.T. Sherman.

A good look at an American Icon

Loved this book. I am from Lancaster, OH so it was fantastic to read a book about such a renowned figure from my hometown. Sherman was a giant of his age and any lover of military history and strategy will love this fascinating and detailed review of his life and career with only scant opinion. The narrator does a great job of being easily understood while maintaining the mood of each section without putting you to sleep. There are even some parts of high brow comedy, masterfully derived by the writer from Sherman's correspondence and memoirs. Highly recommend!
