A darkly comic suspense in the vein of All’s Well and Yellowface, She’s a Lamb! is an edgy and incisive novel that marches toward showtime with a growing unease about the dangers of magical thinking and the depths of delusion.

Jessamyn St. Germain is meant to be a star. Not an actor who occasionally books yogurt commercials and certainly not a lowly usher at one of Vancouver’s smallest regional theaters. No, she is bound for greatness, and that’s why the part of Maria in the theater’s upcoming production of The Sound of Music is hers. Or it’s going to be.

Jessamyn may have been relegated to the position of childminder for the little brats playing the von Trapp children, but it’s so obvious she’s there for a different reason—the director wants her close to the role so when Samantha, the lead, inevitably fails, Jessamyn will be there to take her place in the spotlight.

This must be it. Because if it isn’t, well, then every skipped meal, every brutal rehearsal, every inch won against a man attempting to drag her down will have all been for nothing.

Sharp, relentless, and darkly funny, She’s a Lamb! is a cutting satire about the grotesque pall patriarchy casts over one woman’s delusional quest to achieve her dreams and the depths she will sink to for a chance at the life she’s convinced she deserves.

I love Jessamyn! She’s every hot girls internalized rage against the patriarchy. Jessamyn has daydreams of hurting the men that only ever lust over her but never see her. In this book, she does end up hurting them. She is relatable, delusional, and so real. Although it doesn’t do her any good in this book, I found her thoughts and actions to be very interesting, as I have definitely had some of these thoughts 😂
She is so determined to get what she wants (to be a star) that she will stop anyone in her way. She’s convinced herself that this role is meant for her, to be Maria in the sound of music, but she cannot sing and she has no idea. Her own vocal coach has convinced her that she’s a star. Once she’s gotten rid of the lead and some other people who were going to stop her. She’s on that stage and gets her big wake up call, that she cannot sing. And she spirals.
I loved this dark comedy. My favorite read this year. If you have ever felt like just a piece of meat around men,
I recommend this read. Intrusive thoughts brought to life.

The story

Trauma after trauma with no support in between, Jessmin clings to musicals to feel worthy in her father's eyes until she hears the sound of her own music. Unfortunately, we all do.

Wow! This was such an entertaining ride! Completely unhinged and I loved every second of it!

Like a decent into madness in the best way possible

Wow, this was wild. The beginning is slow, to the point where I paused listening for a bit. By the halfway mark, however, I literally could not stop listening. Highly recommend.

A rollercoaster ride

This was so entertaining! The narrator did a wonderful job! I noticed myself getting caught up in Jess’ s delusions and feeling bad for her. Little by little she pulls the curtain back at her “true” self.

Jess is awful and I loved that
