In the Adirondacks, short carries are portages between waterways, and this book is a collection of short essays about wilderness, outdoor adventures, natural history and small town life - all of which connect with each other through the author's voice and deep sense of place.

For anyone who knows the NYS Adirondacks. Falwell charms us with true stories and observations about the history of the mountains’ people, both denizens and visitors; those who appreciate and experience the wilderness and those who would want it controlled.

If you enjoy Audible content while out walking, plan on longer walks for listening to Short Carries. Elizabeth Folwell writes from Blue Mountain Lake, a small hamlet inside the Adirondack wilderness, a place teeming with bears, loons, trout, herring, woodcock....and infamous characters, small town politics and developmental pressures (think speeding out of state SUVs and new mega-mansions built on the shores of pristine lakes). Folwell is at turns informative, droll, dead serious and always entertaining. Her eye for detail is striking, all the more so because, as she explains halfway through the book, she is visually impaired and navigates the greater world with a guide dog.
