Everyone knows there are rules on Capelo Island:

Obey the will of the Giver.

Never leave the island.

Don’t ask questions.

Since the death of her Father, Lera hasn’t obeyed a single one, and nothing bad has happened…so far. Lera tries to convince her sister, Niena, it will be fine. After all, the Giver isn’t real, right?

Then Niena disappears.

Lera will do anything to find her sister, even playing a role in the culture she despises. But, under all the layers of deception, the truth might be darker than even she bargained for.

As they say, nobody survives outside the protection of the Giver.

I absorbed this book so quickly. Devoured it.
Firstly, I’m really picky about narrators and Heather Daniel’s narration is perfection. She uses so much emotion when needed, so much determination and power. I felt like I was actually in the story with the way her emotions changed as the character’s did.
Secondly, K Michelle Moseley is such a wonderful storyteller. She created this beautiful, haunting world that has me itching for the second book just so I can know more. Whether she was writing about friendship, death, or the complexities of family, she handled each one with such care. And the undertones of religion and religious trauma was so genuine. Between the way the author wrote this and the way the narrator read it, I am feeling emotional and reflective and maybe even a little bit raw. This was such a beautiful story and I cannot wait to get my hands on the second one. (WHEN IS THAT CAUSE I NEEEEED IT)

Great narration, amazing story

Wow. I won’t lie, at first the story had me confused, but then the ending. Dang. I am sad. This story is excellent - it will definitely linger with you long after, like the tide lapping at your mind.

Dark. Beautiful. Haunting.
