I had an uncle who left his hometown and the family business there to become a fine actor. His talent was a minor one, but a pretty one. It lasted for 15 years and was gone. He came home with the ashes of it and died 20 years later, poor and, as it happened, drunk.

Previously unpublished, brilliant and deeply personal, Sinbad is Kurt Vonnegut's story of a young man who decides, against the wishes of his family, to leave home to pursue life as a painter. The result is a picaresque as bizarre and imaginative as any of Vonnegut's most beloved stories.

As with every other Kurt Vonnegut story I’ve read, this held an interesting twist that was not quite what I expected though I was somewhat close this time. This one was not as light as others I’ve read. I found it rather sad and depressing in the end. What if you had the chance to escape this world and live a life in which you had nearly every desire at your fingertips? Would you give up all you have now for such a life? Would it truly be worth it, if you knew there’d be a few catches? I don’t think it would for me.

An interesting tale

Listening to this should be done in one sitting. Then, and only then, will it be like stepping on a thumbtack, but in the best way.
